Some days back i had an argument on twitter with some my fellow Indians who was cursing the secularism and one of them has written in his profile that he is anti secularism i asked them why they are against secularism then they told me to go to google and search the Defination of secularism and i found that it is anti religion but from my childhood i have listened a very different definition of secularism in which i learned to respect all the religions, caste, creed and genders and that was a moment when i realised that Indian secularism is Different from the western one and at that time i also realised that Indian secularism is there in many of fellow Indians even those who are anti secularism because for them secularism means anti religion which is a western thought but i say only one thing that Socialism and Democracy these words has came from western ideologies but still it was there in the Indian Ideology as well to Understand this point i will quote Dr Karan Singh Last Speech in Indian Parliament as Rajya Sabha MP where he talked about Indian Secularism and socialism by quoting verses of the Hindu texts By defining Secularism he quoted one line from Veda's and said "ek kam sat vipra bodhya vanti (Truth is one saints calls it is in different way) and Sarvadharm Sambhava (Respect all religions) that is our view of secularism it is not anti religious we cannot be anti religious in this country " further he also quoted Bhagwat Gita Ishwara sarbudhana videshwati (God resides in the heart of every one not a particular caste creed and gender) and By defining Socialism he quoted one line "Bhujan Hitaaye Bhujan Sukhaye" which is a true definition of secularism and by defining the freedom he quoted a Hindu text and he said "Noble force and Idea's comes together" and that is what an Indian like me says about secularism and it defines that why i support secularism there one more term which is very popular now a days and that is "Nationalism" those criticise nationalism have various examples of it that includes Zionism, Nazism and Fascism but they forgot the Indian Nationalism when people of 3 different kingdoms does a nationalistic movement and made 3 states a one Italian nation. There was Dr Rakesh Sinha who said that Indian Nationalism is Different from the Western one and he said Indian Nationalism means "Rashtra se Rashtravad" not "Rashtravad se Rashtra" if there is a Indian nationalism and socialism then why can't there be Indian Secularism and many of our's strongly advocates that Indian Secularism is not a myth it is a reality and it is not anti religion because anti In India there cannot be a anti religious thing and if it's there the it will will not grow widely like other ideologies.
From my childhood we have heard many stories of Indian secularism the story about how the Jews and Parsis came to India and Indians from every caste religion accepted them as brothers and there is a chairman mosque one of ancient mosque which was a temple but later converted to mosque by Hindus itself for the Muslims and there were many leaders and saints like Chhatarpati Shivaji Raje Bhosle , Mahatma Gandhi, Dr KB Hedgewar, Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya, Dr BR Ambedkar openly stood against the Untouchability and casteism which is also a secularism in my eyes and how ladies like Hansa mehta and Rajkulari amrit kaur and many other women fought for the women rights and today itself there are many organisations fighting for the LGBT Rights so this is also a part of Indian Secularism
So those who says that are against secularism majority of them taking it as a western concept the day they will see a Indian context of the secularism they themselves will openly advocate the secularism and that will be a day which will be a great thing for me Socialism, Secularism Democracy no doubt, Plurality there is no doubt that they are western words and and one or two have different meaning of there in western but in India they all are very positive.
